The Wolf of Wall Street is a 2013 American biographical drama film about Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who was the former CEO of the now defunct Stratton Oakmont brokerage house. Rothschild, a small brokerage house on Long Island, specializing in penny stocks. Through aggressive and unethical salesmanship, he convinces them to approve the stocks for trading. His first few years, Belfort makes a small fortune. But his dishonest methods soon catch up with him and in 1993 the firm forces him out and files a complaint with the NASDAQ stock exchange. After leaving the company, he establishes his own brokerage house, Stratton Oakmont, for Stratton Green which is located on Long Island. The firm becomes successful as Belfort promotes stocks to investors and unloads large amounts of stock through pump and dump schemes. By the mid-1990s, it has a workforce of thousands of brokers and generates billions in capital raising. However, as the Federal Bureau of Investigation uncovers evidence of widespread corruption at Stratton Oakmont, Belfort decides to retire early to enjoy life with his family. Belfort then goes into business with Donnie Azoff, another Long Island mobster, to form SCM Direct (based in Exeter), through which Belfort invests Stratton Oakmont pension fund money. Belfort spends the rest of his life creating lavish lifestyles for his family, never paying any debts. He is arrested in 2008 on charges of stock market manipulation and money laundering for $275 million, but is only convicted after his criminal defense attorney intentionally botches the case by withholding key information from the jury. Although he avoids prison time, he is imprisoned in a federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut after being sentenced to 22 months behind bars for crimes related to his earlier convictions. He is released after 16 months and files for bankruptcy with his wife. He is now separated from his second wife and says that he will not return to finance; he has started a real estate agency in Westport, Connecticut. Belfort lives as a free man as of 2013 and has not returned to prison. On November 21, 2012, the actor Leonardo DiCaprio bought the rights for Belfort's memoirs The Wolf of Wall Street . He is also slated to star as Jordan Belfort in the film adaptation of the book. The film failed the qualify for a nomination at 86th Academy Awards, but succeeded to get 5 nominations at 87th Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. cfa1e77820
